Fehu (ᚠ) — wealth, cattle, and the beginning of the path

Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark. Not merely a symbol of wealth, but the principle of energy in motion — from potential to manifestation, from one to another.

Etymology: why cattle matter more than gold

The word Fehu traces back to Proto-Germanic *fehu — 'cattle', 'property', 'wealth'. The same root gives Old English feoh, Old Saxon feo, and Latin pecunia (money, from pecus — cattle).

In the Iron Age, cattle were the primary store and measure of wealth — not coins, not land documents. Fehu therefore doesn't mean 'abstract money': it means mobile, living wealth. Wealth that moves, multiplies, and can be given away.

This distinction is critical for interpretation. Fehu is not about hoarding — it's about the flow of resources, the principle that wealth held in movement grows, while wealth held in fear diminishes.

Fehu is the first breath of the world. Force that does not yet know form, but already knows direction.

Upright meaning: flow and multiplication

In its upright position, Fehu is one of the most positive runes in the Futhark. Its core meanings:

  • ·Material prosperity arriving through effort or fortunate timing
  • ·Money in motion: new income, promotion, successful negotiation
  • ·The beginning of a new financial or professional cycle
  • ·Fertility and multiplication in the broad sense: a project gains momentum
  • ·Love and attractiveness (via its connection to Freya) — in personal readings
Fehu in the upright position is not a passive 'you will receive' — it is an active 'flow is available if you engage'. The rune calls for movement, generosity, and conscious participation in the cycle of exchange.

Reversed meaning: loss and greed

Reversed Fehu signals the arrest of flow. Money or resources exist but aren't moving — either held back in fear, or leaking away.

  • ·Financial losses or poor investments
  • ·Greed blocking growth — accumulation instead of circulation
  • ·Apathy and stagnation in matters requiring active engagement
  • ·Poor timing for launching new ventures
  • ·Material losses through others' envy or dishonesty

Fehu in the Norns spread

The Norns spread — three positions: Urd (what was), Verdandi (what is becoming), Skuld (what must be considered).

  • ·Urd (past): At the root of the current situation lies a period of abundance or sustained effort to build resources. This is the foundation on which you stand.
  • ·Verdandi (present): Material force is active now — something is growing, moving. Use this moment for action.
  • ·Skuld (future): Ahead lies either growth opportunity (upright) or a warning about loss (reversed). Skuld is not prophecy — it is counsel about what to watch.

Combinations with other runes

Runes in a spread are read not in isolation but in dialogue. Key combinations with Fehu:

  • ·Fehu + Uruz: exceptional physical vitality combined with material force — powerful for health and stamina questions
  • ·Fehu + Jera: the harvest is earned — patience and sustained work will be rewarded, possibly after delay
  • ·Fehu + Hagalaz: disruption threatens the resource base — a warning about sudden financial change
  • ·Fehu + Othalan: ancestral wealth or inherited resources; a family business situation
  • ·Fehu + Isa (reversed): the flow is frozen — stagnation despite apparent resources
