Natal chart: what it is and why birth time is critical

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth — a symbolic snapshot of planetary positions that Western astrology interprets as a template for your psyche.

What a natal chart actually is

A natal chart (also: birth chart, horoscope) is calculated by locating the Sun, Moon, and eight planets against the backdrop of the zodiac at a specific date, time, and geographic location. The result is a circular diagram — the ecliptic projected onto a 360° wheel divided into 12 signs.

CuatroTaro calculates charts using Swiss Ephemeris — the same high-precision astronomical library used by professional astrologers worldwide. The positions are accurate to arc-minutes.

  • ·Sun sign: your core identity, conscious will, life direction
  • ·Moon sign: emotional nature, instinctual responses, the inner life
  • ·Ascendant (Rising): the mask and the gateway — how you meet the world
  • ·Planets in signs: each planet's energy expressed through the qualities of its sign
  • ·Planets in houses: where in life each energy plays out
  • ·Aspects: geometric angles between planets — how they dialogue or conflict

Why birth time matters

The Ascendant — the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth — changes approximately every 2 hours. The entire house system rotates with it. This means:

  • ·Without birth time: we know Sun, Moon (approximately), and 8 planets in their signs
  • ·With accurate birth time: we also know the Ascendant, all 12 house cusps, and the exact Moon degree
  • ·A 4-minute error shifts the Ascendant by roughly 1 degree — significant for precision work
  • ·If birth time is unknown, CuatroTaro explicitly flags which interpretations are estimates
If you don't know your birth time, don't fabricate it. CuatroTaro works with incomplete data — Illuminus will tell you exactly what can and cannot be reliably interpreted from a chart without a time.

The 12 houses

The 12 houses divide the sky (as seen from the birthplace) into 12 sectors, each governing a domain of life. Unlike signs — which move against the background of stars over a year — houses are fixed relative to the horizon and rotate once every 24 hours.

  • ·1st House: self, physical appearance, how you begin things
  • ·2nd House: material resources, money, what you value
  • ·4th House: roots, home, family, what you came from
  • ·7th House: partnerships, marriage, significant others
  • ·8th House: transformation, shared resources, depth psychology
  • ·10th House: career, reputation, public role
  • ·12th House: the unconscious, hidden matters, retreat and isolation

Transits: current sky meets natal map

Transits are the ongoing movement of planets in the sky, tracked against the fixed positions in your natal chart. When a transiting planet forms an aspect to a natal planet, it 'activates' that natal energy.

Saturn transiting your natal Sun (happening every ~29 years) is a classic period of restructuring, increased responsibility, and confrontation with limitations. Jupiter transiting your natal Moon brings emotional expansion and opportunities for connection.

CuatroTaro calculates both daily and weekly transits for Premium subscribers who have provided natal data.

The stars incline — they do not compel. Transits describe the weather; you decide what to wear.
